Tucked away at the end of a narrow alley in central Kyoto, Sundays Coffee (instagram.com/sundayscoffeekyoto) is a stylish hidden café that opened in September 2025. Just a seven-minute walk from Hankyu Kyoto Line’s Karasuma Station (Exit 16) and steps away from the bustling Nishiki Market, it’s an ideal stop for a quiet coffee break amid the city’s lively center.
Housed in a beautifully renovated 80-year-old machiya townhouse, the café preserves much of its original charm while incorporating refined modern design. The space harmoniously blends traditional Japanese architecture with minimalist contemporary touches, dark timber beams and post-and-beam structures recall Kyoto’s heritage, while the sculptural plaster counter, soft paper lanterns, and polished concrete floors bring a modern calm. Stepping stones lead through the interior, subtly connecting the indoor space to the garden. With its muted tones of dark wood, pale walls, and warm plaster, Sundays Coffee exudes a serene, elegant atmosphere that honors both past and present.
The café’s concise, well-curated menu features classic espresso drinks, cold brew, and specialty offerings like Munduk Wine filter coffee. To pair with your drink, there’s a tempting selection of sweets, including KARO Caramel Cake, chocolate pound cake, cranberry croissants, and kaya toast.
Stylish yet understated, Sundays Coffee invites guests to unwind with exceptional coffee in a tranquil setting. The café also welcomes pets and offers easy access from Kyoto’s central attractions.
