2050 COFFEE Gion-Shirakawa (instagram.com/2050.coffeejp) is a new café in Kyoto’s Gion area, opened in August 2026. It is about a one-minute walk from Gion-Shijo Station and a few minutes from Kyoto-Kawaramachi Station, making it an easy stop while exploring the historic Gion-Shirakawa area. Its contemporary concept offers a striking contrast to the traditional streets surrounding it.

The café is part of 2050 COFFEE, a concept developed by Kyoto coffee company Kurasu around the future of coffee. Its name refers to the projected “2050 coffee problem,” when climate change could significantly reduce land suitable for growing Arabica coffee. The café explores this future through sustainable sourcing, technology and a distinctly futuristic approach to coffee.

Coffee is the main focus, with specialty beans selected for quality, traceability and sustainability. Its signature feature is the “Tap Coffee” system, which dispenses specialty coffee directly from a tap in around 10 seconds. The menu also includes espresso drinks, matcha and other beverages, with a small selection of light food rather than a full café menu.

The interior and exterior take a distinctly futuristic and minimalist approach, standing in deliberate contrast to the traditional architecture of Gion. Clean lines, modern materials and the prominent coffee-tap system give the space a sleek, almost sci-fi atmosphere. Rather than trying to recreate a traditional Kyoto café, the design embraces technology and the idea of looking toward the future.

The main attraction is the Tap Coffee experience itself. Watching specialty coffee being dispensed almost instantly gives the café a unique, interactive quality, while reinforcing its central idea: what might coffee shops look like in 2050? The combination of technology, sustainability and futuristic design makes it quite different from the many traditional cafés found around Gion.
