Located in Kyoto’s central Nakagyo Ward, WEEKENDERS COFFEE SHINMACHI (instagram.com/weekenders_coffee) sits in the Shinmachi area, on a 5 minute walk from Hankyu Kyoto Line – Karasuma Station. The cafe opened on September 30, 2026, following the relocation of WEEKENDERS COFFEE TOMINOKOJI, which closed in April 2026. Its location makes it convenient to combine with a walk around the traditional streets of central Kyoto.
WEEKENDERS COFFEE began in 2005 as Café Weekenders in Mototanaka, initially operating as a conventional café. The business gradually became more focused on coffee, beginning its own roasting in 2011, opening the TOMINOKOJI shop in 2016, and moving its roastery in 2019. The new Shinmachi shop represents the latest stage of that evolution, following the closure of the TOMINOKOJI location.
Coffee remains the central focus. WEEKENDERS selects green beans through origin buying and roasts them in-house, aiming for coffees with pronounced sweetness and acidity, a layered character and a lingering finish. The Shinmachi shop continues this approach, with coffee and roasted beans forming the main offering.
The new shop occupies the middle section of a traditional three-unit row house, renovated while retaining the character of the older building. The first floor is designed as the coffee stand and bean shop, while the second floor provides an event space intended for exchanges with coffee professionals, overseas roasters and cafés. The combination of an old Kyoto building and a contemporary specialty-coffee operation is the main attraction: rather than simply recreating the former TOMINOKOJI shop, SHINMACHI gives WEEKENDERS a somewhat larger setting while keeping its long-established emphasis on coffee, architecture and a carefully considered atmosphere.
