About Taste of Kansai

A curated guide to Kansai’s cafés, chosen for the way they look and feel.

Hi, and welcome!

Hi! My name is Giuliano. I was born in Alkmaar, the Netherlands, to an Italian father and a Dutch mother, and I have lived in Osaka since 2008.

I moved to Japan to pursue a career in design, and I work at a Japanese company in interior and exterior design.

I started Taste of Kansai for fun in 2017, under a different name. In 2021 I rebuilt it from the ground up into what Taste of Kansai is today.

Why Taste of Kansai

Japan has tens of thousands of cafés, so finding the right one isn’t easy. Taste of Kansai makes that a little easier, and besides coffee and food it looks closely at what I love most: interior and exterior design, and atmosphere.

I do my best to describe each interior, but interior design is a passion rather than my formal training, so please bear with me. I do this for fun, and I hope it helps you find your next favourite café.

About the site

Taste of Kansai is one of the largest curated café directories in Kansai: more than 570 cafés across Osaka, Kyoto, Hyogo, Shiga, Nara, Awaji and beyond, plus guides, café-hopping walks and in-depth features.

Search by what matters to you, like opening hours, Wi-Fi, wheelchair access or a quiet place to work, and, unlike anywhere else, by interior style: rustic, cozy, modern, industrial and many more.

Questions about café-hopping, or looking for a tailored itinerary? I’d love to hear from you.
