About
Located in Makiyamacho, Kochi City, Tosamizuki Roastery (instagram.com/tosamizuki_roastery) sits beside Kochi Gakugei High School and has its own parking. Although it is still within the city, the area around the café is quiet and residential, giving the traditional house a peaceful setting away from the feel of the city centre.
The building itself is more than 160 years old and has a connection to the Yamauchi family, the ruling family of the former Tosa domain. It has been renovated by Gendaikigyosha while keeping much of its original character. The company dates back to 1959, when it started as a small coffee shop, and opening its own roastery had long been an ambition. In April 2026, Tosamizuki reopened in its current form as a roastery and café, moving away from its previous retail-goods concept and returning its focus to coffee, sweets and roasted beans.
Coffee is at the heart of the new Tosamizuki. The roasting takes place in a converted kura storehouse on the property, with beans also supplied to other cafés and restaurants operated by Gendaikigyosha. The shop offers its own blends in light, medium and dark roasts, as well as single-origin beans from countries including Ethiopia, El Salvador and Panama. Drinks include café latte and house-roasted cold brew, which the shop describes as having the richness of a dark roast with a clean finish. There is also a selection of sweets, including coffee financiers, cakes and other baked goods.
The main attraction is the combination of a working coffee roastery and a more-than-160-year-old traditional Japanese house. Rather than recreating an old-fashioned atmosphere in a new building, Tosamizuki allows the original architecture and timber details to remain part of the café experience. The quiet exterior, traditional structure and modern coffee operation come together naturally, making the shop particularly interesting for anyone who enjoys both specialty coffee and historic Japanese buildings. The setting also gives Tosamizuki a strong sense of place, connecting Gendaikigyosha’s current roasting project with the company’s roots as a coffee shop.
