Cini Gelato (cini チニ) (instagram.com/cinigelato) is tucked away in a quiet residential neighborhood of Nara City, about a 25-minute walk from Kintetsu Nara Station. Located away from the busy temples and the main streets of Naramachi, reaching the shop feels less like a tourist stop and more like discovering a local neighborhood favorite. Limited parking is also available a short walk from the shop.

The project transformed a traditional Naramachi-style kominka into a specialty gelato shop. According to the designers, the concept centers on carefully sourced seasonal ingredients, with an emphasis on reducing food waste by incorporating surplus fruit whenever possible.

Each day, Cini offers around fourteen seasonal gelato flavors, crafted with fresh ingredients and a gentle, balanced sweetness that allows the natural flavors to shine.

The interior embraces the character of the original kominka, preserving its wooden structure and simple architectural details. The result is a warm, understated space where the focus remains on the quality of the gelato rather than elaborate décor. Soft tones, clean lines, and a modest serving counter create a calm atmosphere that reflects the shop’s ingredient-first philosophy.

From the outside, Cini blends seamlessly into its residential surroundings. Its understated façade and subtle signage respect the traditional streetscape while giving the historic building a contemporary purpose, inviting visitors to slow down and step away from Nara’s busiest attractions.
