Hopout #3 - Nakazakicho, Osaka

Updated 2023/08/18

Welcome to our third HopOut. This time we will be visiting the extremely popular Nakazakicho area which is popular for its many cute cafes, shops and many other activities.

There is no specific route for this hopout. Honestly this area is more fun to explore without a map. But we’ll provide one anyway.

  • Since Nakazakicho is a continuously changing area with shops and cafes coming and going we will occasionally update this page.

There are mutliple ways to get to Nakazakicho area but here are three:

A is Nakazakicho Station, exit the gate and you will be right on Nakazakicho doorstep.

Two is Umeda station, this will take about 5 to 10 minutes on foot, but I personally like this because you can pass through Chayamachi area which is also really nice.

And D is coming via Tenjinbashi6Chrome station. It’s a little further away than Umeda (about 10 min) on foot but you will pass through nice alleys with a mix of old and new houses, shops and bars.

La Granda Familio Nakazakicho

La Grande Familio Nakazakicho is a lovely little shop selling  homemade organic granola. Just visiting it for its cute interior and exterior is a must although the granola is absolutely delicious.

Elemeca Labo

On of the top spots in Nakazakicho to visit is eremeka kenkyuusho, an amazing collection of discarded amusement machines of which some predate world war 2.

The shop has a collection of over 40 machines of which the oldest one is an American crane game that was made in the 1920s.
You enter the shop and put 200 yen (two 100 yen coins) in a slot at the entrance and the machines at the entrance will start moving which will make small electrical devices start twirling and spinning until a plastic gachagacha ball rolls out.

You can then exchange that ball for 3 playing coins. You can use that playing coin in most machines but some of them only accept 10 yen coins. So stock up on 10 yen and 100 yen coins before coming here.
Entering inside feels like you’ve entered the showa era of Japan with all the retro machines.

Don’t miss out on the submarine game hidden in the back of the helicopter game.

Wonderland (English speaking barber)

A special entry to finish this post is Wonderland, a quaint little barbershop located on the edge of Nakazakicho.

The barbershop is situated in a lovely old Japanese building and has a lovely vintage retro interior. The barber is very friendly and speaks English.

Open: 13:00 – 22:00
