'Koan' (instagram.com/koan.kyoto), which opened in July 2025, is a stylish café located in a quiet suburb along the Philosopher’s Path. Housed in a former akiya, the building has been renovated with care, retaining much of its original structure. The exposed wooden framework, sand walls, and some of the  original glass windows remain, while the rest has been transformed into a refined modern space. The name “Koan” comes from a Zen term referring to a paradoxical question or riddle, such as “What is the sound of one hand clapping?” meant to break ordinary patterns of thought and encourage a deeper understanding. This quiet, contemplative spirit is woven into the café’s atmosphere.

Approaching from the Philosopher’s Path, the café is discreetly hidden behind a tall wooden fence and lush greenery. A short climb up stone steps through a small Japanese garden leads to the side entrance, blending the experience of arrival with a subtle ritual of transition from the outside world to a more meditative space.

Inside, natural light pours through large glass windows, illuminating a spacious interior. A communal table sits at the center, while a beautiful zelkova hardwood table near the window invites quiet reflection. Antique furnishings, sourced from Pejite Aoyama (instagram.com/pejite_aoyama) and Kumagawa Antiques (instagram.com/kumagawa_antiques), add texture and history, their natural wood tones harmonizing with the traditional framework. Modern touches, such as a Bang & Olufsen speaker gently playing ambient music, complete the scene, balancing the serenity of Japanese design with contemporary elegance.

The menu focuses solely on drinks, with pour-over coffee sourced from Bolivia, Peru, Kenya, and Ethiopia alongside espresso-based options like cappuccino, café latte, and espresso tonic. Japanese offerings include matcha from Saga, white tea from Kagoshima, and Setoda mikan juice, providing a range that complements the café’s calm, deliberate pace. 2025年7月にオープンした「Koan」（instagram.com/koan.kyoto）は、哲学の道沿いの閑静な住宅街にあるスタイリッシュなカフェです。元空き家だった建物は、オリジナルの構造をほぼそのままに、丁寧にリノベーションされています。木組み、土壁、そして元のガラス窓はそのままに、洗練されたモダンな空間へと生まれ変わっています。「Koan」という店名は、禅語で「片手で拍手をすると、どんな音になるのか？」といった逆説的な問いや謎かけを指す言葉に由来し、日常的な思考パターンを打ち破り、より深い理解を促すことを目的としています。この静かで瞑想的な精神が、カフェの雰囲気に深く織り込まれています。

哲学の道から歩いてカフェに向かうと、高い木の柵と緑に囲まれた、隠れ家のようなカフェが現れます。石段を少し上ると、小さな日本庭園を通り抜け、お店の横に入口があります。そこは、到着した瞬間の感動と、外の世界からより瞑想的な空間へと移るさりげない儀式のような感覚が融合した空間です。

店内は大きなガラス窓から自然光が差し込み、広々とした空間を明るく照らしてて、居心地の良い雰囲気になっています。お店の真ん中には共用テーブルが配置され、窓の近くにも美しいケヤキ材のテーブルが置いてあります。ペジテ青山（instagram.com/pejite_aoyama）とクマガワアンティークス（instagram.com/kumagawa_antiques）から仕入れたアンティーク家具が、質感と歴史を感じさせ、自然な木の色合いが建物の伝統的な骨組みと調和しています。バング＆オルフセンのスピーカーから優しくアンビエントミュージックが店内で流れていると、モダンなタッチが空間を演出し、日本の静寂と現代的なエレガンスが抜群。

メニューはドリンクのみで、ボリビア、ペルー、ケニア、エチオピア産のハンドドリップコーヒーに加え、カプチーノ、カフェラテ、エスプレッソトニックといったエスプレッソベースのドリンクもご用意しています。佐賀県産抹茶、鹿児島県産白茶、瀬戸田産みかんジュースなど、日本茶も揃っていて、カフェの落ち着いた空間にぴったりです。また、Coffee Collectif（instagram.com/coffeecollectif）のコーヒー豆も販売されています。
