Located inside Kyoto’s lively Teramachi Shotengai, this compact café Uru Coffee Kyoto (instagram.com/uru__kyoto/) is just a short walk from Hankyu Kyoto Line’s Kawaramachi Station, making it an easy stop for both locals and tourists exploring the nearby Nishiki area. The owner previously worked in Italian restaurants and bakeries, experience that quietly informs the café’s concept. The name Uru is derived from uruoi—a Japanese word expressing moisture, richness, and a sense of refreshment—an idea that fits well with a space designed for calm breaks amid the busy arcade. Opening early at 8 a.m, it’s especially convenient for morning coffee seekers before sightseeing.
The café occupies a former clothing store that has been carefully renovated by Transform Inc (https://transform-design.co.jp/), resulting in a stylish, modern wa-inspired interior. Roughly the size of a single-car garage, the space feels intimate yet well balanced. A tiled bench lines the left wall with three small tables while a counter sit toward the back. The counter features a cedar-paneled koshikabe with built-in speakers, adding warmth and subtle character. Despite its size, the space feels thoughtfully composed, and it’s also dog-friendly, with water and light snacks provided for canine visitors. Plans are already in place to open a gallery space on the second floor in the future.
Currently, the focus is on drinks, with small food items planned for the near future. Coffee is brewed using beans from Ue Coffee (instagram.com/ue.coffee) in Osaka, offering a reliable and well-rounded cup. The menu also includes open sandwiches such as smoked salmon with cream cheese, avocado with cottage cheese, and a seasonal fruit option that changes throughout the year. While simple, the lineup feels carefully curated, and alcohol will be added to the menu later on, hinting at a café that will gradually expand its role from morning stop to relaxed afternoon or evening spot.
