Description
WHATSOPP. (instagram.com/whatsopp_cafe) Café is a breakfast-focused coffee shop and gallery located in central Kyoto’s Nakagyo Ward, in the Taruyacho area just a short walk from Tozai Line - Nijojo-Mae Station. Its convenient location places it within easy reach of Kyoto’s main downtown district, making it an easy stop for both locals and visitors. The cafe opened in October 2025 and operates primarily from morning through the afternoon, the café functions as a neighborhood gathering spot where guests can drop in for a quick coffee or settle in for a full breakfast.
The café’s name, “WHATSOPP.,” comes from the phrase “What sopp,” with sopp meaning “mushroom” in Norwegian. Much like the wide variety of mushrooms found in nature, the owner envisioned the café as a space that brings together many different forms of creativity — displaying diverse artwork, goods, and ideas within one environment.
From the street, WHATSOPP. presents a clean, contemporary appearance typical of Kyoto’s newer generation of specialty coffee shops. Its simple signage and understated façade reflect a modern, international café style that blends naturally into the evolving urban coffee culture of the city.
Inside, the space follows a bright, minimal aesthetic with a Western-style café layout centered around counter-service coffee and relaxed seating suited to solo visitors as well as small groups. The atmosphere revolves around breakfast, coffee, and sweets, positioning WHATSOPP. somewhere between a brunch café and a specialty coffee stand rather than a traditional Japanese kissaten. A key appeal of the café is the ability to enjoy a complete breakfast alongside carefully prepared desserts, with menu options designed to accommodate a variety of dietary needs — an approach that resonates with both international guests and local regulars.
The menu focuses on breakfast plates, specialty coffee, and sweets. Guests can expect classic espresso-based drinks and brewed coffee paired with approachable, Western-influenced dishes and desserts. Non-coffee drinkers are equally considered, as the food and sweets offerings allow visitors to enjoy the café experience even without ordering coffee.
One of the café’s most distinctive highlights is the transparent dome located in the garden at the back of the property. The structure was created in Lithuania by Viking Dome, then imported to Japan and carefully assembled by hand, with polycarbonate pieces fitted together one by one. The dome adds a unique architectural element to the café, creating a bright, immersive space that connects guests with the outdoor setting while reinforcing the café’s artistic identity.
WHATSOPP. Café represents a modern Kyoto breakfast destination that combines specialty coffee, sweets, art, and dietary-conscious dining within a compact urban setting. Its central location, daytime-focused service, and thoughtfully designed environment make it a practical and memorable stop for anyone seeking a relaxed breakfast or light meal in the heart of the city. The owner and staff, who speak English, are known for being especially friendly and easy to talk to, creating a welcoming atmosphere that helps both international visitors and local guests feel immediately at ease.
