In the middle of Kyoto, right across the street from tourist attraction Nijo Castle is 'Usagi Coffee', a stylish café and shop that opened its doors on 6 June 2022. Usagi means bunny in Japanese and is the main theme of the cafe which was produced by the owner of two popular Harajuku fashion brands 'VANQUISH' and '#FR2'. It's logo features an abstract design of a rabbit's nose

The café is located right next to exit #2 of Tozai Line's Nijojo-mae station and is a renovated kyomachiya that was built in the 1920s. The shop can be easily found with its quite unique exterior that has noren made of short ropes hanging over the entire width of the façade.

Inside the layout of the building has been partially left untouched and customers will first enter the entrance space with a large rabbit mask hanging above the doorway and some shelves on the right with Usagi Coffee brand goods (bags, tshirts mugs etc) for sale.  From the entrance you will immediately enter the spacious café area that is completely open from the front to the back with the kitchen and order counter in the rear. Most of the floor has been poured with concrete except for the part of the floor from the entrance to the counter which still features the large cobble stone remnants from the old machiya.

The interior mixes traditional Japanese mixed with a modern contemporary style with most of the walls, the benches and the counter mortar made except for the wall behind the kitchen which features the old machiya sand walls. Across from and next to the kitchen counter, against the wall are two mortar benches with round terrazzo FUNGI 45 tables for the customers. In the back is a large glass window and door that lead to the inner courtyard and the special shop in the back. The shop in the back sells more Usagi Coffee and other designer goods.

The menu consist of various drinks that range from coffee (drip coffee, cafe latte (600 yen)) to soft drinks (matcha latte, charcoal latte, organic orange juice and organic apple juice).  But Usagi's main specialty item is their Bunny shaped castella which is a kind of a wagashi (Japanese traditional confectionary). After you order it will be freshly made in front of you on the specially ordermade machine near the entrance. A delicious treat that goes very well with a drink.

Usagi Coffee is a stylish renovated kyomachiya cafe that sells delicious bunny shaped castella. It's located nearby Nijo castle which makes it an ideal stop before or after your visit to the castle.

京都の中京区に、観光スポット二条城の向こう側に2022年6月6日にオープンしたスタイリッシュなカフェ「兎珈琲」「ウサギ　コーヒー」があります。兎珈琲は原宿の有名なファッションブランド「VANQUISH」と「#FR2」のプロデューサーでクリエイトされて、FR2のウサギがカフェのテーマになっています。ロゴはアブストラクトようの兎の口元になっています。

カフェは東西線の二条城前駅の2番出口のすぐ隣にあり、築100年の京町屋をリノベーションしたカフェとショップです。外観は全幅に縄のれんで結構独特で目立ています。

リノベーションで店内のレイアウトはほぼそのまんまでお客様はお店に入るとまず玄関のエリアに入ります。目の前の戸口の上に大きな兎のマスクが飾られて、右側のシェルフで兎のオリジナルグッズ「鞄、シャツ、マグカップなど」が販売されています。玄関からすぐ広々としている開放的な空間が見えます。床はリノベーションでほぼ全面コンクリートになって、玄関からカウンターまでの一部だけは京町屋の大きな石床の残りです。

インテリアは和風とモダン、コンテンポラリーなデザインのミックスで、キッチンの後ろにある砂壁以外の壁、ベンチとキッチンカウンターは全部ダークグレーモルタルになっています。モルタル壁とウッド柱と桁でとてもスタイリッシュなデザインになっています。キッチンカウンターの向こう側と隣に壁付けベンチの二つと丸いテラゾー性のFungi 45テーブルがあります。お店の奥に大きなガラス窓と扉を通ると奥にある中庭ともう一つのショップスペースをアクセスが出来ます。ここもオリジナルデザイナーグッズが販売されています。

メニューはコーヒー「ドリップコーヒー、カフェラテ」やソフトドリンク「抹茶ラテ、チャコールラテ、オーガニックオレンジジュースとオーガニックリンゴジュース」で様々な飲み物があります。兎珈琲の定番アイテムはウサギの形をしたオリジナルのベビーカステルア。オーダーしてから入口の隣にある特注の人形焼き器で作られています。焼き立てカステラとコーヒーの口当たりが良い。

兎珈琲がとてもスタイリッシュなカフェで、二条城も近いからお出かけついでにとてもおすすめなお店です。
