After closing its longtime roastery near Kyoto Station, WIFE & HUSBAND  has opened a beautiful new home just a five-minute walk from Kuramaguchi Station on the Subway Karasuma Line. The husband (instagram.com/wifeandhusband_kyoichi) -and-wife (instagram.com/wifeandhusband_ikumi) -run café has relocated to a lovingly restored traditional machiya, bringing together its coffee and antiques under one roof while preserving the warm, welcoming atmosphere that has made it a favourite among both locals and visitors. The previous location, which had operated for around seven years, ultimately had to close because the ageing building had reached the end of its life, prompting the search for a space that better reflected the couple’s long-term vision.

The new building is full of history and character. Once a traditional machiya with its own bomb shelter, the property has been carefully renovated by the owner himself, with the former shelter now serving as a storage room. The first floor houses the café, while the second floor has been transformed into an antique shop filled with carefully selected furniture, tableware, linens, and decorative pieces. The owner has long been passionate about antiques and regularly introduces newly discovered items to the collection, giving returning visitors something new to admire each time they visit. The interior strikes a balance between clean architectural simplicity and vintage charm, creating a calm, timeless space that encourages guests to slow down and linger.

Coffee remains at the heart of WIFE & HUSBAND. Although the owner previously worked for a tea company, he is entirely self-taught as a coffee roaster, developing his own roasting style through years of experimentation rather than formal training. The café’s menu reflects this philosophy with a concise selection that prioritizes quality over quantity, featuring signature house blends alongside a rotating range of single-origin coffees. Guests can enjoy classic hot and iced coffee, café au lait, and a handful of non-coffee drinks, while freshly roasted beans are also available to take home. Among the signature blends are DAUGHTER, known for its deep roast, gentle acidity, and clean finish, and SON, a richer blend designed to pair especially well with milk. Decaffeinated coffee is also available for those looking to enjoy the café’s flavour without the caffeine, and regular customers can purchase coffee ticket books, reinforcing the café’s welcoming neighbourhood feel.

新店舗は歴史と個性に満ち溢れており、かつて防空壕を備えた伝統的な京町家だった建物をオーナー自身が丁寧に改修し、古い防空壕は収納室として改装されました。1階はカフェと焙煎場、奥にある階段を上がって2階には厳選された家具、食器、リネン、装飾品が並ぶアンティークショップとなっています。オーナーは長年アンティークに情熱を注いでおり、定期的に新しく発見した品々をコレクションに加えています。そのため、リピーターのお客様は訪れるたびに新しい発見と感動を味わうことができます。建築的なシンプルさとヴィンテージの魅力が絶妙なバランスで調和した店内は、時代に左右されない落ち着いた素敵な空間を創り出しており、ゆったりとした時間を過ごすことができます。
