Coffee Base Shimogamo (instagram.com/coffeebase.shimogamo) is a riverside specialty coffee shop that opened in July 2024 on the ground floor of the SHIMOGAMO-EAST complex in Kyoto. Located about an 8‑minute walk from Keihan Demachiyanagi Station and roughly 5 minutes on foot from Shimogamo Shrine, it serves as a convenient stop between the shrine and the residential neighborhoods along the Takano River. The name continues the Coffee Base brand that began with Coffee Base Kanondo in 2018, positioning this site as a new “base” for coffee along the river in the Shimogamo area.
The café occupies a former car showroom, resulting in a spacious interior with a long, open floor plan and generous ceiling height. Large riverside windows create a bright atmosphere and frame the Takano River and its cherry trees, especially notable in spring when the blossoms line the view. From the street, the building appears as a clean, contemporary structure with simple lines and extensive glass on the first floor, presenting a modern façade that blends with the multi-use offices and gallery above.
On the menu, the focus is on specialty coffee, including drip coffee, espresso-based drinks such as caffè latte, and seasonal cold options, reflecting the wider Coffee Base group’s emphasis on carefully sourced beans. Sweets include classic café staples like cheesecake and cookies, alongside a signature “mitarashi panna cotta” that pairs a smooth panna cotta base with a sauce inspired by mitarashi dango, a nod to the local festival traditions of nearby Shimogamo Shrine. Light snacks and sweets are designed to complement the coffee, allowing customers to build a simple coffee-and-dessert set for a short break or a longer stay.
Coffee Base Shimogamo presents a modern riverside café environment that emphasizes specialty coffee within a bright, glass-fronted space overlooking the Takano River. Its proximity to Demachiyanagi Station and Shimogamo Shrine, combined with a focused drink lineup and distinctive local dessert offerings, positions the shop as a practical and visually appealing stop in the Shimogamo area.
