Sway Coffee Roastery Kyoto Higashiyama (instagram.com/sway_coffee_roastery) opened in March 2026, establishing itself as a new specialty coffee stop on the historic Nene-no-michi in Kyoto’s Higashiyama district. Set along this atmospheric pedestrian street lined with temples, shops, and traditional townhouses, the café sits within easy walking distance of Kiyomizu-Gojō and other Higashiyama transport access points, making it a convenient pause between major sightseeing spots. The Kyoto Higashiyama branch follows earlier SWAY Coffee Roastery locations, including the Hanamizuki café in Toyama and the Hida Takayama café in Gifu, extending the brand’s focus on in-house roasting and neighborhood-oriented coffee stands into one of Kyoto’s most visited areas.
The café operates as both a roastery and a sit-in space, with an interior concept centered on specialty coffee as a daily ritual rather than an occasional indulgence. The design blends Japanese and contemporary elements, as seen in the material palette and spatial layout. There are two entrances: one on the left that leads directly into the café space, and a side entrance where guests walk up a small set of steps and pass the order window before entering.
Inside, the café spans two floors. The ground floor features curved bench seating paired with small round tables topped in natural hardwood, creating a soft, flowing layout that contrasts with the more structured elements of the space. The roasting area is integrated into the interior, acting as a visual focal point for both passersby and seated guests. Upstairs, the second floor centers around a large rectangular tatami seating area, offering a panoramic view across the Higashiyama district through wide windows that frame the surrounding rooftops and greenery.
The menu at Sway Coffee Roastery features a variety of hand-drip coffees, including single-origin options from Ethiopia, Guatemala, Indonesia (Mandheling), and Brazil, each presented with tasting notes and roast levels. Espresso-based drinks such as lattes, cappuccinos, and americanos are available alongside flavored options like white mocha and salt caramel latte. The selection also includes seasonal offerings and non-coffee drinks such as hojicha and matcha lattes. For food, the café serves sandwiches and desserts, with limited treats like hojicha terrine, matcha terrine, and matcha dorayaki adding a distinctly Japanese touch. Customizations, including milk alternatives and extra espresso shots, are available, and the menu extends to a small selection of beer and kids’ drinks.
Sway Coffee Roastery Kyoto Higashiyama now operates as a specialty roastery-café embedded within one of Kyoto’s most historic walking routes, emphasizing freshly roasted beans, careful brewing, and a design that bridges traditional and contemporary sensibilities.
