Shoku to Mori

New

Description

Tucked away in Kyoto’s Shimogyo Ward, between Nishi Honganji Temple and Higashi Honganji Temple, Shoku to Mori opened its doors on June 8, 2022, inside a beautifully preserved machiya townhouse dating back to the Taisho era. About a 13-minute walk from Gojo Station on the Karasuma Line, the café blends seamlessly into the historic streetscape, its narrow, deep façade reflecting the classic architectural style long associated with Kyoto’s traditional neighborhoods.

Step inside, and the atmosphere shifts to one of quiet comfort. The renovated century-old space features tatami rooms and thoughtfully arranged seating for up to 20 guests, creating an intimate setting where a gentle breeze and soft natural light enhance the sense of calm. At the heart of the experience is a menu built around seasonal Kyoto vegetables, carefully prepared by an experienced chef who balances time-honored techniques with contemporary creativity.

The interior carries a nostalgic Showa-era charm, with traditional tatami seating and spacious layouts designed to encourage guests to slow down and relax. Open from morning through café hours, the machiya offers a welcoming place for breakfast, lunch, or an afternoon break. Its homelike ambiance, combined with its proximity to Kyoto’s historic landmarks, makes dining here feel both restorative and distinctly local.

Food takes center stage through plant-forward dishes inspired by obanzai, Kyoto’s traditional style of home cooking. Seasonal vegetables appear in an array of small side dishes, showcasing freshness and simplicity. Popular selections include a tofu hamburger steak served with around ten varieties of vegetable sides, as well as chilled Chinese noodles and tempura lunches featuring ingredients such as sawara sourced from Awaji. Meals are complemented by beverages including locally brewed sake, thoughtfully chosen to pair with the cuisine.

More than just a café, Shoku to Mori offers a relaxed machiya dining experience where vegetable-focused obanzai cuisine and Kyoto’s living history come together in harmony.
