Kissa Edaha (喫茶室 枝葉) is a small countryside café in Tanba-Sasayama, Hyogo, opened in April 2024 inside a renovated 100-year-old kominka along the historic Saikyo Kaido in the Nishinono area. Just a short walk from the Nishinono bus stop on the Keihan Kyoto Kotsu line, it’s easy to reach by public transport, yet surrounded by open fields and the quiet scenery of a traditional village. The low roofline, wooden exterior, and earthy tones of the building have been carefully preserved, allowing the café to blend naturally with the neighboring farmhouses and maintain a calm, satoyama feel.
Inside, the café is intentionally small, with seating for about 11 people. The layout is designed to keep the space open and focused on the view outside, where fields stretch out beyond the windows. Natural wood, white walls, and minimal decoration let the character of the old house shine through. Coffee is at the heart of the experience: each cup is brewed by hand using a nel-drip method, emphasizing richness, depth, and aroma, and encouraging guests to slow down rather than rush through a visit.
The menu revolves around this carefully prepared coffee and a short selection of house-made sweets. Most of the desserts are vegan, made without eggs or dairy, and change with the lunar cycle. Around four seasonal or event-based items are offered at a time, with new selections introduced at each new moon using ingredients that reflect the season. This approach gives regular visitors something new to look forward to while keeping the menu closely tied to the surrounding agricultural landscape.
Kissa Edaha is an intimate café that brings together specialty hand-brewed coffee, seasonal plant-based sweets, and the atmosphere of a restored kominka. With its limited seating and thoughtfully changing menu, it offers a quiet, unhurried experience for those willing to step slightly off the main route in search of a more reflective kind of café visit.
