Description

Nestled quietly among Hyogo’s golden rice fields, Jyusangatsu No Mado (13th Moon’s Window) stands like a dreamy Western-style villa gently placed in the countryside. Its bright white exterior and spacious terrace create a striking scene against the endless green landscape, making the café feel like a secret escape far from the rush of everyday life.

The owner, who honed their taste and sensibilities at major select and interior design shops in Tokyo, opened Juusangatsu no Mado with a clear vision: to build a place that offers more than just food or products. They wanted a café that proposes an entire lifestyle, where beauty isn’t just displayed but lived.

The café’s name was inspired by the building itself, chosen with the hope that every visitor would feel as though they’ve slipped out of the everyday and into a space that transcends time and place. And indeed, the story starts with the building: a 47-year-old Japanese modernist structure that the owner fell in love with and boldly renovated. The first floor of the 500-square-meter property was completely stripped back, leaving a vast gallery-like expanse. Walls are left in their imperfect state, like fragments of modern art, giving the room the air of an overseas atelier.

This ground floor houses the physical location of the owner’s long-running online shop “lizm,” a curated world of clothing, fabrics, and artisanal pottery gathered from makers across Japan. Each piece feels like a quiet treasure waiting to be discovered.

Follow the outdoor spiral staircase upward and you’ll find yourself in the café on the second floor. The interior carries the same vision of coordinated living: rattan sofas and antique furniture rest against a pure white backdrop, softened by generous sunlight pouring through large windows. In autumn, golden rice stalks sway outside like a slow-motion ballet. Even the aprons worn by staff, as well as the tableware and cutlery used to serve guests, are selected from “lizm,” allowing the beauty of everyday tools to age gracefully through use.

Step even further upward and the 300-square-meter rooftop opens like the sky itself, a breathtaking panorama where refreshing breezes and endless views dissolve whatever weight you brought with you.

To preserve the serenity, filming is not allowed and young children (under elementary school age) are restricted. It is a space designed for quiet moments, gentle clarity, and mindful enjoyment. Payment is cash only, so tuck a few coins into your pocket before visiting.

Sweets like their rich cheesecake and refreshing grape juice are among local favorites. Prices are a touch higher than typical cafés, but here, luxury isn’t loud. It lives in stillness, in beautifully aged pottery, in design that reminds you to slow down and breathe.

Whether you’re celebrating something meaningful or simply craving calm, Jyusangatsu No Mado welcomes you into a world where life’s simplest elements clothing, food, and living gather in harmony to deepen your everyday experience, one peaceful moment at a time.
