CONTO is a fresh addition to Kyoto’s vibrant café landscape, having opened on May 31, 2025. Located at the northwest corner of Oike-dori and Koromonotanacho, it quickly gained attention in the Karasuma Oike area thanks to its unique concept and collaboration between three specialty shops from Kumamoto: the ice cream shop ARBOL, the coffee roaster Appartement, and the donut brand JAGAAD BROS DOUGHNUTS. Its central location makes it easy to access for both locals and tourists exploring the heart of Kyoto.
Though compact, CONTO offers a warm and inviting atmosphere. The interior seats about four people, while additional bench seating is available under the eaves for those who prefer to enjoy their treats outdoors.
What sets CONTO apart is its emphasis on specialty coffee and handcrafted vegan ice cream. Designed as a stand-style café, it welcomes guests from morning to evening, making it perfect for a quick pick-me-up or a more relaxed break. The collaboration brings together the strengths of each brand, resulting in a menu that is creative and inclusive, with a strong focus on plant-based options. Even during the pre-opening phase, the café generated buzz, with people lining up as word spread about its distinct offerings.
The menu is a highlight, especially for those seeking plant-based indulgence. ARBOL provides six flavors of vegan ice cream, featuring imaginative combinations such as sake lees and salted koji, all made without eggs or dairy. Guests can also enjoy waffle ice cream sandwiches and coffee jelly, offering playful twists on classic sweets. On the beverage side, the cold brew coffee stands out. Priced at 600 yen, it’s known for its smooth, low-acidity profile and clean finish that holds up even as the ice melts.
Every item at CONTO reflects a commitment to quality and thoughtful craftsmanship. With its creative menu, collaborative spirit, and cozy ambiance, CONTO offers a refreshing experience for café lovers in Kyoto. It’s an inviting new spot for those in search of great coffee, inventive vegan treats, and a touch of charm in the city center.
