Description

Nestled in the picturesque town of Omihachiman in Shiga, is the lovely Koukoan Café - Hankoya. This cozy café, which opened its doors in October 2018, sits in a beautifully renovated 200-year-old kominka evoking a blend of history and charm.

The shop combines a café, gallery space, shop and even "Hankoya", a third generation hanko stamp carver, Mr. Saito Kouko-san. As you enjoy the delicious food or sweets, you'll have the pleasure of enjoying the art or witnessing the master at work, carefully crafting intricate hanko stamps or working on a mural artwork next to his desk. Mr. Saito is not only a talented artist but also very friendly and always ready for a pleasant chat. You can also order your own personal hanko which will be created with meticulous care and delivered to your doorstep.

To immerse yourself further in the rich cultural experience, don't hesitate to ask the staff for access to the Japanese room, where you can admire various beautiful artworks. And don't miss the chance to explore the lovely tsuboniwa, a small traditional Japanese-style inner garden tucked away in the back, adding a touch of tranquility to your visit.

Koukoan Café's interior blends modern and traditional Japanese design elements seamlessly, creating a unique and inviting atmosphere. Decorated with charming antique items, the café and the hanko atelier combine the essence of both old-world charm and contemporary style.

When it comes to satisfying your taste buds, Koukoan Café has an array of mouthwatering options to tempt you. Indulge in their delicious lunch plates, featuring delicious choices such as the volumy quiche lunch, a daily meat plate, or a delightful combination of both. Besides the lunch plates, there is also a sweets plate available.

A visit to Koukoan Café is the perfect addition to a day trip exploring the lovely sights and history of Omihachiman village. Let the cozy ambiance and warm hospitality welcome you and enjoy delicious food while seeing a true hanko master at work.
