If you’re looking for a cozy and unique café experience in Kyoto, look no further than ‘British Brunch Sankayoh‘ located near Kitaoji station that opened on November 22, 2022. Tucked away in a traditional renovated Kyomachiya, this café is managed by an English husband and his Japanese wife and offers proper British food in Kyoto.

The interior is spacious with a mix of Japanese style, retro British elements, and modern abstract art. A part of the renovation was done by the owner’s classmate who created a lovely retro tile kitchen backsplash. The wall next to the entrance outside  as well as the kitchen counter wall are decorated with vertical colorfully painted splats that adds to the artistic atmosphere of the cafe. There is a small table for two, 4 kitchen counter seats, and an elevated platform in the back (required to take your shoes off) with Japanese-style tables and zabuton that has a view over the backyard. The café provides accessibility for strollers and wheelchair users with a ramp located at the entrance.

The main draw of this café is of course, the food – proper English food, including cottage pie, roast beef and mashed potatoes, English breakfast, curry plate, and of course, fish & chips.

The cottage pie comes with a delicious bowl of vegetable soup with ginger and parsley, making for a great combination. And the fish and chips are a standout dish, with big pieces of fried fish with a crunchy exterior but soft and tasty white fish inside. The homemade tartar sauce is so good that you’ll want to eat it with everything.

All in all, British Brunch is a must-visit for anyone in Kyoto looking for a delicious and authentic British lunch experience.

北大路駅の近くに2022年11月にオープンした隠れ家カフェ「British Brunch 山荷葉」があります。伝統的な京町家をリノベーションしたカフェに、英国人の旦那と日本人の妻が営んでいるカフェは、京都で本格的な英国料理が食べれる一軒家カフェです。

店内は広々として、和風、レトロな英国要素、現代的な抽象アートがミックスされたインテリアとなっています。内装の一部「とても素敵なレトロなタイルのキッチンバックスプラッシュ」は、オーナーの同級生が作成してました。入口の横の壁とキッチンカウンターの腰壁には、カラフルで描かれた縦の板が装飾されて、よりアートの雰囲気を演じます。お客席は２人用の小さなテーブルが１つ、キッチンカウンターの席が４つ、後、カフェの奥には靴を脱ぐ必要の小上がりに4人用の和風のローテーブルと座布団が二つと二つのウッドラウンジチェアもあります。カフェの裏側に広い庭があり、美味しいご飯を食べながら眺めを楽しめることができます。入口の前にランプも設置されて車椅子やベビーカーでも入りやすい。

British Brunchに行く目的は、もちろん、食べ物です。コテージパイとスコティッシュブロス「ベジタブルスープみたい」つき、ローストビーフとマッシュポテト、イングリッシュブレックファースト、カレープレートと、もちろん、フィッシュアンドチップスもあります。

コテージパイについてるスープはショウガとパセリも入って、素晴らしい組み合わせになっています。フィッシュアンドチップスは、揚げ魚が数個あり、とても大きいです。フィッシュは外側がサクサクして中身は柔らかく、美味しい白身魚がたっぷりと入ってます。ついてる手作りのタルタルソースがフィッシュと食べないとダメですがそれもめちゃくちゃ美味しくてフィッシュ以外のものとも食べたい。
