Located in an alley near Karasuma station  is ‘Amairo’, a small cafe that is famous for their round taiyaki, a Japanese cake (usually fish-shaped) filled with either azuki (sweet bean paste), custard or a mix of the two.

‘Amairo’ is off the beaten path and can be a little hard to find. The entrance of the alley faces a tower-mansion in a semicrowded street. It has no clear signs except for a small chalkboard that hangs inside the entrance so doesn’t stand out. Once you do find the entrance, walk all the way to the back and you will find the shop on your left.

The cafe has a Japanese style wooden facade with glass windows incorporated in the wood, we are in Kyoto after all.

The interior is modern but simple. There are 2 counters with counterchairs, 1 standing stable and two pair-seats (small benches) next to a window in the back with a view of a mini Japanese garden.

Amairo has a simple menu that offers drinks: “coffee, soda or juice” and of course the their main treat, Amairo’s TAIYAKI.

Amairo’s taiyaki are very special as they have are round shaped unlike the traditional taiyaki that are usually fish-shaped. The taiyaki comes with 3 types of fillings: “custard, azuki or a mix of both”.

They are freshly baked, so absolutely delicious and go very well with a cup of coffee.

If you are in Kyoto a visit to Amairo is heavily recommended.

烏丸駅の近くにある路地に「丸い形のたい焼き」で有名な「あまいろ」というカフェがあります。

「あまいろ」は結構隠れていますので見つけにくい。路地の入り口はマンションを面していますが、「あまいろ」をチョークで書いてある小さな黒板しかないのであまり目立てない入り口になっています。入り口を見つかったら、路地の多くに進んで「あまいろ」は左側になっています。

お店の外観は京都だからウッドとガラス が和風のスタイルに組み合わせてしています。絶対に観光者に大喜びです。

インテリアはモダンでシンプルです。カウンターは２つとスタンディングテーブル一つがあります。さらに、多くの窓の近くに小さなベンチがあります。窓からお店の後ろにある小さな和風の庭が見えますのでこれも観光者に喜ばれると思います。

「あまいろ」のメニューはシンプルで飲み物はコーヒー、ソーダやジュースがありますがメインはもちろん「たい焼き」です！

たい焼きは普段魚の形になっていますが、あまいろのたい焼きは特別に丸い形になっています。とても持ちやすくて、可愛いです。中身は３つ「カスタード、アンコ、カスタードとアンコのミックス」があります。

焼き立てたい焼きがとても旨いです。外がちょっと寒かったらあたたかいたい焼きとコーヒーはすごく合います。

京都にお出かけするなら、あまいろも訪れるのはとてもおすすめです。
