Opened in July 2024, 'Noki Noki' (instagram.com/nokinoki.kyoto/) is an architecturally inspired café addition to Kyoto’s café scene. The cafe is located in the historic Nishijin district, northwest of Kyoto Gyoen National Park and just a five-minute walk from Imadegawa Jofukuji busstop. Designed and run by the architecture firm KINO, the café occupies a newly built machiya, a traditional townhouse, designed to harmonize Kyoto’s preservation aesthetics with modern materials and sensibilities in the front, while the office of KINO is in the back. Inside, soft green accents bring a touch of freshness to the otherwise minimalist interior, where concrete, wood, and clean lines create a calm and modern atmosphere that nods subtly to Kyoto’s traditional aesthetic.

The café’s standout feature is its innovative use of the nokishita (eaves) space, an architectural element that reflects the typical machiya structure with its narrow frontage and deep, corridor-like layout, often referred to as “unagi no nedoko” or “eel’s bed.” This semi-outdoor area doubles as a flexible space for pop-up shops, art exhibitions, and collaborative events with both local and international creators.

Noki Noki offers a focused menu of specialty coffee drinks, including house-roasted blends from Brazil and Guatemala, espresso-based beverages like café lattes, and refreshing options such as espresso tonic and ginger ale. On the sweet side, the café serves a thoughtfully curated selection of treats, including banana cake, cheesecake, affogato, and lovely succulent cupcakes.

Combining thoughtful design, a focus on community, and a carefully curated menu, Noki Noki offers both locals and visitors a memorable space to enjoy coffee, sweets, and creativity beneath the eaves of a modern machiya.

2024年7月にオープンした「Noki Noki」（instagram.com/nokinoki.kyoto）は、建築にインスパイアされたおしゃれなカフェです。京都御苑の北西、歴史ある西陣エリアにあり、今出川浄福寺バス停から徒歩わずか5分の場所に位置しています。建築事務所KINOが設計と運営を手がけており、カフェの奥にはKINOのオフィスも併設されています。柔らかなグリーンのアクセントがミニマルなインテリアに爽やかさを添え、コンクリートや木材、すっきりとしたラインが京都の伝統的な美意識をさりげなく反映した、落ち着いたモダンな雰囲気を醸し出しています。

NokiNokiの最大の特徴は、軒下の革新的な活用です。軒下は、間口が狭く、奥行きのある廊下のような間取りを持つ典型的な町家建築を反映した建築要素で、「鰻の寝床」とも呼ばれています。この半屋外のスペースは、ポップアップショップ、アート展、国内外のクリエイターとのコラボレーションイベントなど、様々な用途に活用できるフレキシブルな空間です。

メニューには、ブラジルやグアテマラ産の自家焙煎ブレンドコーヒー、カフェラテなどのエスプレッソベースのドリンク、エスプレッソトニックやジンジャーエールといった爽やかなドリンクなど、スペシャルティコーヒーを中心としたメニューを提供しています。スイーツメニューでは、バナナケーキ、チーズケーキ、アフォガート、さらに可愛いサボテンのカップケーキなど、厳選されたスイーツからも選ばれます。

思慮深いデザイン、コミュニティへの重点、そして慎重に選ばれたメニューを組み合わせたNoki Nokiは、地元の人々と観光客の両方に、モダンな町家の軒下でコーヒー、スイーツ、そして創造性を楽しめることが出来ます。
