In Northern Kyoto, between Kinkakuji and Shimogamo shrine, on a 12 minute walk from Karasuma Line’s Kuramaguchi Station is ‘Okashi Tsukuru’, a kyomachiya (traditional Kyoto wooden townhouse)  renovated into a stylish café.

During the renovation the exterior of the café was mostly left untouched. It has the typical Kyoto look and feel with persimmon juice treated dark wood façade and the grey Japanese rooftiles. It has a large glass display window through which you can get a glimpse of the interior inside.

The interior of the café has been completely renovated and has a modern interior style with a rather unique layout for a café, with the kitchen surrounded by a wooden L-shaped counter which you often see at an izakaya or sushi restaurant but not at a café. The corners of the concrete kitchen have a beautiful smooth bevel finish.

The counter comes with stylish C-3 armchairs by Atelier Kika that have only one arm rest on one side which takes a bit of getting used to.

After the staff takes your order and the cook will then prepare your order in the kitchen in front of you which gives the customer the pleasure to see the ‘artist’ at work.

Okashi Tsukuru has a small menu but it’s options are high quality. They have a selection of toasts, fruit-sandwich (using seasonal fruits), pancake, donut and a scone that comes with butter and red bean paste. Everything prepared carefully in front of you and served on stylish tableware.

The scone is fantastic and tastes like no other. They’re freshly baked and when you take a bite it’s crunchy on the outside but delicously soft on the inside. That in combination with the butter and red bean paste makes it a tasteful delight.

After you finished the meal and pay the bill how about some delicious freshly baked sweets to bring home. Okashi Tsukuru has a big selection of delicious sweets.

Okashi Tsukuru is a kyomachiya renovated into a stylish café that sells absolutely delicious food and drinks that are prepared in front of you. That in combination with the great hospitality makes this a highly recommendable café with a high revisit value.
