Kissa Wakayama opened in July 2025 in Kyoto’s Shimabara shopping street, about a 10-minute walk from JR Tambaguchi Station. Established by Daisuke and Nagisa Wakayama—both previously active in Kyoto’s café scene—the café occupies a renovated former hat shop, blending nostalgia and modern design. The exterior preserves the modest retro character of the original building, with wooden accents and soft neutral hues designed by Little Record Studio, while the interior leans toward refined simplicity, featuring natural wood, warm lighting, and a faint hint of mid-century influence.
The main attraction of the café lies in its dedication to freshly baked goods and coffee prepared from carefully selected beans. The scent of bread and roasted coffee fills the compact space, creating a calm and familiar atmosphere that draws both locals and visitors. Designed for quiet enjoyment, the seating and layout encourage slow mornings and relaxed afternoons, contributing to the café’s growing reputation as a hidden retreat in Kyoto’s west district.
The menu centers on house-made bread, pastries, and a modest selection of café staples. Popular items include yeast scones, croissants, cardamom-flavored rolls, and daily sandwiches filled with seasonal ingredients. The coffee offerings feature drip and latte variations brewed from specialty beans, alongside lighter drinks such as iced americano and milk-based options. The pairing of soft breads and aromatic coffee forms the core experience, complemented by baked goods that emphasize the natural flavor of their ingredients.
Kissa Wakayama represents a thoughtful addition to Kyoto’s café landscape, uniting craftsmanship and familiarity in a space that respects its past while embracing modern sensibilities. Its restrained aesthetic and focus on handmade quality mark it as a destination for those who appreciate the quiet rhythm of Kyoto’s everyday culture.
