Sights Kyoto

New

Description

Tucked into Miyagawasuji in Higashiyama area just a short walk from Gion, and the Kamogawa River, SIGHTS KYOTO (instagram.com/sights_kyoto) opened in April 2022 with an unusual brief: to be useful to everyone. Part café-bar, part coworking space, part product shop, and part tourist information center, it positions itself as a meeting point between the people passing through Kyoto and the people who live there.

The building itself carries well over a century of history. It was originally an ochaya, a type of establishment connected to geisha culture, and the renovation has been careful not to erase that past. The old kyomachiya structure is largely intact, and a tsuboniwa, a small inner garden of the kind traditional townhouses often kept, still sits within the space. Rather than being dressed up as a showpiece, the historic bones of the building simply remain present, giving the interior a quiet depth that newer cafés tend to lack.

The layout brings together a café-bar counter and a coworking area in a way that feels open and social rather than segmented. It's a practical arrangement that suits the mixed crowd the place tends to attract: people stopping in mid-sightseeing, remote workers settling in for a few hours, and locals looking for somewhere unhurried to meet.

The menu leans toward drinks and light snacks rather than full meals, which suits the pace of the place well. The bar offers Kyoto craft beer, local sake, coffee, and a range of other drinks alongside Kyoto-style snacks. One item worth noting is the Matcha Ore Float, topped with matcha ice cream from the well-regarded Gion Tsujiri. It's the kind of menu designed for an afternoon pause rather than a sit-down lunch.

What makes SIGHTS KYOTO stick in the memory is less any single feature and more the combination: a genuinely old building given a new and thoughtful purpose, in a location that draws both curious visitors and neighbourhood regulars. The social mix the space encourages, tourists and locals sharing the same counter, the same garden view, is quietly rare, and it's what gives the place its particular character.
