About

Dairoku Coffee (instagram.com/dairoku_coffee_awajisima) , which opened its doors in January 2023, is nestled along the west coast of Awaji Island in the nostalgic port town of Goshiki, Sumoto. Housed in a renovated 60-year-old building that once housed the local fishing cooperative, the café keeps much of its original exterior, weathered wood, simple lines, and all, blending the nostalgic charm of the fishing village with a cozy, creative update. Its location, offers easy access to the nearby beaches and the famous Awaji sunset, making it a hidden gem for both locals and travelers seeking a tranquil seaside escape.

Inside, Dairoku Coffee surprises with its playful and creative layout. The interior preserves the character of the old building, including weathered marks and even some graffiti, while introducing stylish touches and unique seating arrangements-such as cozy nooks halfway up the stairs that evoke a secret hideout. The centerpiece is a U-shaped counter, which divides the space and allows guests to watch the baristas at work. Large windows frame views of the harbor and the evening sun, creating a relaxed, homey atmosphere that encourages lingering over a cup of coffee

The menu at Dairoku Coffee centers around specialty coffee brewed with rare, top-tier equipment, including an Astoria “STORM” espresso machine in a color unique to Japan and a Mythos grinder, also one-of-a-kind in the country. Beans are sourced from a local Awaji roaster, ensuring a rich, nuanced cup every time. The drink lineup features classics like café latte (using Awaji milk), Americano, and flavored lattes, as well as a standout chai made from imported Australian tea leaves. For food, the café offers an ever-changing selection of house-made baked goods and bagels, with popular items like shima financiers and pound cakes, often prepared by the owner’s son, a pastry chef trained in France. The baked goods are made with local ingredients.

Dairoku Coffee is a perfect blend of local history, creative design, and serious coffee craftsmanship. Whether you’re stopping in for a quick break during Awaji sightseeing or settling in to watch the sunset with a fresh pastry and expertly brewed coffee, this café offers a memorable, heartwarming experience that captures the spirit of Awaji’s seaside community.
