About

Chipper’s COFFEE & SANGAS (instagram.com/chippers_coffee_sangas) opened on February 11, 2026, along the west coast of Awaji Island in Tori-gaiura, Goshiki-cho, Sumoto City. The café is easy to reach by car, with generous parking available on both sides of the property.

The shop is housed in a beautifully renovated kominka , the former home of owner Kousuke’s grandfather, giving the space a calm, wood-focused interior with a relaxed, lived-in warmth. Traditional architectural details remain, while modern seating and greenery create a comfortable, retreat-like atmosphere. Outside, the understated exterior opens onto a terrace overlooking a carefully maintained Japanese garden, which has quickly become one of the café’s most appealing features.

Chipper’s is run by a welcoming family team: Kousuke, who previously worked at Dairoku Coffee, alongside his sister Shiori and their mother. The café also carries a deeply personal story. Kousuke’s parents had long dreamed of opening a kissaten-style coffee shop together. After his father passed away, Kousuke decided to bring that dream to life, transforming the family home into the café it is today. A guitar that belonged to his father is displayed inside, adding a touching reminder of the inspiration behind the space.

The name “SANGAS” comes from Australian slang for sandwiches, reflecting the café’s focus on coffee and hearty sandwich offerings. “Chipper,” meanwhile, conveys a cheerful, lively mood, fitting for the welcoming atmosphere the family has created.

The food menu centers on three signature sangas: ham, tomato and arugula; tuna melt; and chicken schnitzel. Each is designed to be satisfying yet balanced, offering generous portions without feeling heavy. On the drinks side, the focus is on carefully brewed coffee, with beans sourced from Rou Coffee and prepared with attention to aroma and quality.

With its tranquil garden setting, thoughtfully renovated traditional house, and focused menu of coffee and sandwiches, Chipper’s COFFEE & SANGAS stands out as a peaceful Awaji Island destination. It’s an ideal stop for visitors seeking scenic surroundings, calm interiors, and heartfelt hospitality.
