Hughes Pizza

The Nakazakicho area is constantly changing, with new cafes and shops appearing frequently, keeping the neighborhood alive and vibrant. ‘In August 2022, a brand new pizzeria emerged onto the scene under the name of “ Hughes Pizza “, named after the British owner who studied making pizzas in the UK. After having lived four years in Japan he decided to open his own shop, a casual NY style pizza place that serves 20 inch pizzas.

The shop is hidden away in a small alley parallel to the big Toyozakisagishuu road behind a large dark brown mansion and sits in a renovated 100 year old house. The café’s exterior features a sleek black stucco finish, complemented by mustard-colored brick remnants at the bottom half of the facade. Catching your eye on the window is a quirky illustration of a pizza being beamed up into a UFO, nestled between the words “HUGHES” and “PIZZA”. You’ll find the entrance nestled in a small portico to the right, with a charming sign hanging next to the entrance. The renovation work was handled by unitedcraft .

Inside you will find a chic, revamped interior with a cozy ambiance. The dim lighting complements the dark brown wooden framework, a remnant of the old house, with renovated wood paneled walls. The kitchen seamlessly follows the color scheme, featuring a dark brown wood counter and a spacious glass case that proudly showcases the freshly baked pizzas. The cafe features a large atrium that stretches all the way to the wooden ceiling, creating an airy and open feel. The seating consists of two large tables for four next to the kitchen and two two-person tables positioned near the window.

Hughes sells 20 Inch New York style pizzas available for both whole orders and individual slices and of course there is also a take-out option. You’ll have a range of choices at Hughes, with 5 or 6 different pizzas available on any given day as well as at least one vegetarian option. From classic cheese and pepperoni to unique varieties like maitake and red&black (featuring black olives), there’s something for everyone. Keep an eye out because Hughes loves to get creative and introduce new types of pizza from time to time. Besides pizzas Hughes also sells delicious garlic knots. To compliment the pizza, Hughes offers various softdrinks, various beers, wine and coffee.
