About
Nestled in a quiet neighborhood in the Fukushima area of Osaka is “Folksaka – Folk茶菓,” (instagram.com/folksaka) a charming and cozy vegan-focused cafe. Folksaka opened its doors in July 2024 and is run by a cheerful husband and wife, Scott and Erika, who had been hosting pop-up food events since 2019 before finally opening their own cafe. The cafe is just a 2-minute walk from both JR Tozai Gakkentoshi Line – Shinfukushima Station and Hanshin Line – Fukushima Station.
Folksaka’s concept revolves around being a vegan and gluten-free cafe and bakery, with a strong ethos centered on using fresh, seasonal ingredients at their peak, avoiding animal products or wheat, and offering food that makes you feel good.
The cafe is housed in a renovated akiya (an old vacant house) and spans two floors. Its facade features a combination of deep mineral green walls and wood accents, giving it a warm, welcoming vibe. Above the entrance, a small, cozy balcony adorned with plants and decorative lights adding a homely touch to the exterior. The building’s blend of old and new creates a harmonious balance between tradition and modern design.
The first floor of the cafe features a rustic, minimalist design, with exposed wooden beams and a simple, narrow layout. The order counter, located near the entrance, has a wooden top and displays vibrant photos of their menu offerings. A glass fridge case embedded in the counter showcases their baked treats. To the left, a wooden staircase leads to the second floor, while the semi-open kitchen at the back offers a peek into the preparation process. Dried flowers and pendant lights hang from the ceiling, adding a cozy, natural touch to the space.
Upstairs, the second floor offers a cozy and intimate seating area with wooden tables and chairs as well as counter seats along the staircase, maintaining the warm, minimalist theme. Wooden flooring and simple walls create a relaxed atmosphere. A few potted plants on the balcony and dried flowers inside enhance the natural vibe, while the balcony allows plenty of natural light to flood in, making the space feel bright and welcoming.
Folksaka’s menu offers a variety of seasonal delicacies, with both savory and sweet lunch plates. In addition to the lunch plates, there’s a tempting selection of baked treats at the counter, including cannoli, blondies, cakes, and cookies. The presentation is gorgeous, and everything is absolutely mouthwatering.
After years of hosting pop-up events, Folksaka has finally found a permanent home near central Osaka, in a beautifully renovated building with a comfortable atmosphere. A visit to this cozy cafe and its lovely owners is highly recommended.
