About

Tucked away in the quiet hills of Yoshino Town in Nara, Kunisu Shokudo (instagram.com/kunisu_syokudo/) offers a warm, nostalgic retreat housed in a beautifully renovated former pharmacist’s residence that is over 100 years old. Opened in November 2019, the cafe blends the charm of traditional Japanese architecture with a relaxed, modern sensibility. Its name, “くにす食堂 Kunisu Shokudo,” is derived from the historical pronunciation of the local area “国栖” (now read as “Kuzu”), chosen to reflect both the region’s heritage and the unique identity of the space.

The exterior features original wooden beams and a small inner garden that welcomes visitors with a rustic, countryside atmosphere. Upon entering the cafe, guests first step into a spacious entrance area with a counter on the right for those just stopping by for coffee. For dine-in visitors, shoes must be removed before entering the main space, where large tatami rooms, big windows, and an eclectic mix of donated furnishings create an inviting, lived-in feel. The setting encourages relaxing moments, with seasonal views of green valleys, floor cushions, and stove heaters that enhance the experience throughout the year. More than just a cafe, Kunisu Shokudo functions as a gathering place that fosters community and connection.

The menu highlights locally sourced, additive-free meals rooted in traditional Japanese home cooking. A rotating chalkboard lists the daily set lunch, typically including grilled meat, seasonal vegetables, and a flavorful enoki mushroom and tofu miso soup. Desserts such as silky puddings and dense cheesecakes are made in-house, and the coffee is carefully prepared to match the quality of the food. Visitors can also browse small handmade goods like washi paper, emphasizing the cafe’s ties to local culture and craft. The cafe is only accessible by car and offers plenty of parking space.

In the back of Kuniso Shokudo you will also find a lovely art gallery and bagel shop called HanarenoBagel (instagram.com/hanare_bagle/) .

Kunisu Shokudo stands out for its thoughtful integration of tradition, community, and comfort. With its homestyle meals, welcoming environment, and scenic surroundings, it offers a genuine taste of rural Nara hospitality that continues to attract both locals and travelers alike.
