About

Tucked away in Kyoto’s Shimogyo Ward, between Nishi Honganji Temple and Higashi Honganji Temple, Shoku to Mori (instagram.com/shoku_to_mori) opened its doors on June 8, 2022, inside a beautifully preserved machiya townhouse dating back to the Taisho era. The cafe is located about a 13-minute walk from Gojo Station on the Karasuma Line, and blends seamlessly into the historic streetscape. The understated façade blends quietly into the surrounding streetscape, with a minimalist design that hints at the building’s historic origins.

Inside, the atmosphere shifts to quiet comfort within a cozy traditional setting. The renovated century-old space features tatami rooms and thoughtfully arranged seating for up to 20 guests, creating an intimate environment where a gentle breeze and soft natural light enhance the sense of calm. At the heart of the experience is a menu built around seasonal Kyoto vegetables, carefully prepared by an experienced chef who blends time-honored techniques with contemporary creativity.

A subtle Showa-era charm runs throughout the machiya, encouraging guests to slow down and unwind. Open from morning through café hours, it provides a welcoming spot for breakfast, lunch, or an afternoon break. Its homelike feel, paired with its location near Kyoto’s historic landmarks, makes a visit both restorative and distinctly local.

Food takes center stage through plant-forward dishes inspired by obanzai , Kyoto’s traditional style of home cooking. Seasonal vegetables appear in an array of small side dishes, showcasing freshness and simplicity. Popular selections include a tofu hamburger steak served with around ten varieties of vegetable sides, as well as chilled Chinese noodles and tempura lunches featuring ingredients such as sawara sourced from Awaji. Sweets consist of a choice between pudding or cheesecake.

More than just a café, Shoku to Mori offers a relaxed machiya dining experience where vegetable-focused obanzai cuisine and Kyoto’s living history come together in harmony.
