About
In Northern Kyoto, between Kinkakuji and Shimogamo shrine is Okashi Tsukuru, a kyomachiya renovated into a stylish café.
During the renovation the exterior of the café was mostly left untouched. It has that typical Kyoto look and feel with the mostly dark brown wood façade and the dark grey Japanese rooftiles. It has a large glass display window through which you can get a glimpse of the interior inside.
The interior of the café on the other hand has been completely renovated and has a modern style with quite a unique layout for a café. It has a long wooden L-shaped counter with high class wood/leather chairs surrounding the kitchen, similar to an izakaya or sushi restaurant. You order the food and then you can see the cook prepare your order right in front of you which gives the cafe an intimate feeling.
Okashi Tsukuru has a small menu but it’s options are of high quality. They have a selection of toasts, fruit-sandwich (using seasonal fruits), pancake, donut and a scone that comes with butter and red bean paste. Everything prepared carefully in front of you and served on stylish tableware.
The scone is fantastic and tastes like no other scones we’ve eaten before. They’re freshly baked and when you take a bite it’s crunchy on the outside but soft on the inside. That in combination with the butter and red bean paste makes it a tasteful delight.
Okashi Tsukuru is a lovely renovated kyomachiya with a stylish interior where food is carefully prepared in front of you and tastes absolutely fantastic. The service is also wonderful, which makes this a highly recommended café with a high revisit value.

The interior of the café has been completely renovated and has a modern interior style with a rather unique layout for a café, with the kitchen surrounded by a wooden L-shaped counter which you often see at an izakaya or sushi restaurant but not at a café . The corners of the concrete kitchen have a beautiful smooth bevel finish.
C-3 armchairs by Atelier Kika
The counter comes with stylish C-3 armchairs by Atelier Kika that have only one arm rest on one side which takes a bit of getting used to.
After the staff takes your order and the cook will then prepare your order in the kitchen in front of you which gives the customer the pleasure to see the ‘artist’ at work.
