About

A short walk from Karasuma-Oike Station, ‘La Madrague’ is a charming cafe that blends Kyoto’s old-school kissaten culture with a retro, nostalgic ambiance. Decorated with 1950s American movie posters, it feels like stepping into a different era, offering a cozy and inviting space to relax. Originally opened as Kissa Seven in 1963, it was revived as La Madrague in 2011, carrying forward its rich history while maintaining the warmth of a classic Japanese cafe.

The highlight of the menu is the legendary “ Corona Egg Sandwich “—a massive creation featuring thick, pillowy bread filled with a perfectly soft and fluffy omelet made from four eggs. It’s indulgent, satisfying, and big enough that you might need to take leftovers home, which the cafe happily accommodates. The sandwiches are called “Corona Sandwiches” because they originated from the now-defunct Restaurant called “Corona” in Kyoto, which was famous for its egg sandwiches. Beyond the sandwich, the menu also offers comforting Western-style dishes like iron plate Napoletana and meat sauce spaghetti, adding to the nostalgic appeal.

Adding to its charm, La Madrague is also pet-friendly, making it a welcoming spot for those who want to enjoy a meal with their furry companions. Whether you’re here for a leisurely afternoon or just to try one of Kyoto’s most famous sandwiches, La Madrague delivers on both taste and atmosphere.
