About
HAUS is a tea stand located in the Takamiya-cho neighbourhood of Kyoto's Shimogyo Ward, close to the Kiyomizu-Gojo area and just a short walk from the Kamo River and Sauna no Umeyu. The shop is tucked away among the narrow streets of the neighbourhood, approximately a six-minute walk from Kiyomizu-Gojo Station.
Opened on October 20, 2026, HAUS is a new venture by the group behind popular Kyoto brands including Hassho Ryoyousha (八十八良葉舎), Togitaro and Oni Tofu. The café occupies the ground floor of a four-storey building acquired by the group, which also houses its head office. The interior is particularly striking, combining a clean, contemporary setting with a massive solid-wood counter made from a single piece of timber. Its natural grain and warm appearance create a strong contrast with the more minimal surroundings.
The main focus at HAUS is tea, approached in a rather unconventional way. Using an Italian espresso machine, the staff grind and pressure-extract tea leaves to create concentrated drinks, offering a different take on traditional Japanese tea. The selection includes hojicha, Japanese green tea, Japanese black tea and Taiwanese oolong, available in various combinations with milk, fruit and other ingredients. Popular options include hojicha milk, passion fruit oolong and mango coconut. Coffee is also available, with beans supplied by Kyoto-based Solkatt Coffee. The oversized wooden counter and the unusual espresso-style tea extraction are undoubtedly the main attractions, making the preparation process as interesting as the drinks themselves.
HAUS is a refreshing addition to Kyoto's café scene, bringing together innovative tea preparation and distinctive contemporary design in one memorable space.
