About

Opened on November 10, 2025, GIER COFFEE STAND (instagram.com/gier.coffee) brings a polished, design-conscious coffee experience to Kyoto’s Horikawa-Marutamachi area. Located along the bustling Horikawa Dori, just a short walk from the Horikawa Marutamachi bus stop and the Tozai Line’s Nijojo-mae Station, the café sits comfortably within the Nijo Castle neighborhood, an easy detour for both locals and visitors exploring central Kyoto.

The café occupies the ground floor of a mid-century style multi-story building, where a muted stucco façade, wide street-facing windows, and dark awnings create a calm, understated street presence. Above, the structured grid of windows and textured vertical volume contrast with the minimal ground level, subtly framing the café as a contemporary insertion at street level. The ground floor presents a minimal contemporary interior, anchored by a sleek stainless-steel kitchen counter and warm beige stucco walls. Counter seating encourages quick stops, making it ideal for takeaway or a brief, well-crafted coffee break.

Upstairs, the atmosphere shifts. The second floor opens into a spacious, home-like setting filled with carefully selected furniture pieces. Cozy yet refined, this level also functions as a furniture shop, open every other day, where visitors can experience the pieces in a lived-in environment. The contrast between the industrial minimalism below and the softer residential feel above creates a layered design narrative throughout the space.

The third floor houses Raku Inc., the interior design studio behind the café, a detail that reinforces the project’s strong design identity and cohesive aesthetic.

On the menu, GIER COFFEE STAND focuses on specialty coffee and thoughtfully paired sweets. Expect donuts, scones, and other baked goods, alongside single-origin offerings. Rather than full meals, the offering centers on quality coffee and dessert-style items designed for a refined pause in the day.

With its clean architectural lines, multi-level concept, and curated menu, GIER COFFEE STAND reads as both a neighborhood landmark and a destination for design-minded café lovers in Kyoto.
