Just a short walk from Kitaoji Station on the Karasuma Line, Laughter KAMOGAWAstand sits across the Kamo River in Kyoto’s Sakyo Ward.
Laughter Kamogawa occupies the ground floor of a converted traditional building clad in beautifully weathered dark timber, with a relaxed open terrace framed by cream canvas curtains right on the edge of the Kamo River. It shares the space with coworking spot Whatever upstairs, giving the whole place a creative, community-minded vibe that matches its easygoing coffee-and-hang energy.
The menu offers a thoughtfully curated selection centered on specialty coffee, with hand-dripped brews, cold brew, espresso-based classics, and carefully sourced single-origin beans alongside house blends ranging from light to dark roasts. Beyond coffee, guests can enjoy creative options such as coffee jelly, coffee float, coffee milk, and refreshing lemonade, as well as a small selection of non-coffee drinks. The café also complements its beverages with simple desserts like chocolate brownies and affogato, creating a well-rounded menu that emphasizes quality coffee while providing a few sweet treats and alternative drinks for a relaxed café experience.
Beyond the coffee, the café’s greatest appeal is its warm and welcoming atmosphere. Visitors can relax with a good book, admire artwork created by one of the owner’s American friends, or simply enjoy a drink while taking in the peaceful riverside setting. Combined with the friendly, attentive staff, the space feels less like a typical café and more like a comfortable retreat where guests are encouraged to slow down and stay awhile.
