Description

Located in the picturesque town of Kurashiki in Okayama Prefecture is the charming houseplant store and cafe, 'JORRO' - instagram.com/jorro_okayama/. The name "Jorro" comes from the Japanese word for "watering can," reflecting the cafe's theme, which revolves around greenery and the owner's passion for interior plants. The owner, inspired by visits to gardens and historical buildings both in Japan and abroad, is fascinated by spaces where architecture and nature harmonize.

The cafe is tucked away on the second floor in a quiet corner of the Hayashi Genjuro Shouten building. This building, once the Hayashi Pharmacy in Kurashiki’s Bikan Historical Quarter, was renovated and reopened in March 2012 as a modern facility with eight curated stores specializing in denim, household items, living goods, and food and drink. The space offers a blend of food, clothing, and lifestyle products that invite you to experience the slow, rich atmosphere of Kurashiki. On the second floor, you’ll also find the Hayashi Genjuro Store Memorial Room, which displays historical artifacts such as medicine chests and curtains passed down through the Hayashi family, telling the story of the pharmacy’s evolution. Additionally, the observation deck on the third floor offers panoramic views of the Bikan Historical Quarter and the scenic townscape of Kurashiki.

The cafe space is somewhat hidden behind a large bookshelf and boasts a cozy, vintage-style interior with warm, earthy tones. Natural light streams through the large windows, while the abundant greenery contributes to the space's relaxed and inviting ambiance. The wooden floors and furniture exude a rustic charm, with an eclectic mix of chairs, tables, and seating arrangements, creating a harmonious yet unique atmosphere.

The menu offers a selection of drinks and sweets. Beverage options include coffee (hot or iced, in various blends), Irish Cream Coffee, Green Tea, Matcha Latte, Craft Cola, and Orange Juice. Special offerings include Forest Soda—a refreshing drink made with syrup distilled from tree essences such as fir, cypress, red pine, larch, and spruce found in the forests of Karuizawa—as well as Forest Gin, infused with Japanese tree essences like cypress, cedar, oak, umbrella pine, and Japanese juniper. There’s also Kusawake, a non-alcoholic herbal drink made from a blend of spices and herbs. For sweets, the cafe serves Yokan, Baumkuchen, and Cake. Both Forest Soda and Forest Gin are available for purchase.

In addition to the cafe, JORRO also sells plants, as well as a stunning collection of stones and gems imported from around the world. Be sure to explore the collection while you're there.

With its friendly owner, comfortable atmosphere, and unique drinks, JORRO is a must-visit spot if you're in the Kurashiki area.
